About the Challenge

"the 2009 Scholarship Challenge is the best small market program for youth in the state of PA, Pa. Assn. of Broadcasters."

Every winter since 1981, scholarship challenge has been heating up the twin tiers...as teams of high school seniors come to the valley to take part in the award winning radio quiz sponsored by WATS Broadcasting, Inc. The live competition is aired on WATS-AM 960 in Sayre; WAVR-FM 102.1 in Waverly.

General Manager Chuck Carver created scholarship challenge 28 years ago (when he was the station's news director) and has presided over its evolution into the most honored radio broadcast in the Twin Tiers.

In addition to winning 21 state and national awards for programming excellence, scholarship challenge, through the generosity of its sponsors and patrons, has awarded more than $124,000 to its participating districts over the years.

Every January, February and March, there is a series of Four Qualifying Broadcasts in the spacious Waverly Jr-Sr High School Auditorium. The winner from each of those preliminaries returns for the March finals and a chance to take possession of the coveted "Kwasnoski Cup" for one year. The public is welcome to all our Challenge broadcasts.

Community support is what makes the challenge so successful and allows us to honor the "Stars of the classroom" every winter. For it was Sir Francis Bacon who said, "For all knowledge and wonder is an impression of pleasure in itself." and we have proudly adopted that motto as the mission statement for scholarship challenge.
