Notre Dame Crusaders In Finals

In a battle of mostly New York schools, Notre Dame came out and claimed the final berth in the 25th annual Scholarship Challenge at the Waverly Jr. – Sr. High School yesterday afternoon.

The Crusaders’ quiz team eked out a tie-breaking victory over the team from Tioga Center in their first match and then defeated four-time Kwasnoski Cup winner Elmira Free Academy in the high scoring finals.

Notre Dame joins Montrose, Spencer VanEtten and Northeast Bradford in the final round of the First Citizens National Bank Scholarship Challenge on April 2.

The Notre Dame squad is comprised of captain Jesse Scott, Logan Dolph, Henry Dalrymple and Sean Hancock. Alternates on the Crusaders’ team, coached by Carol Morrell, are Riane Corter and Chris DeMarco.

Teams from Tioga Center, Southside, Elmira Free Academy, Notre Dame, Dryden and Mansfield played the Challenge yesterday.

“I feel that they are a really balanced team knowledge-wise,” said Coach Morrell about her Crusaders. “They are a great group to work with.”

The initial match-up of the day had the Tigers of Tioga Central facing off against the Southside Green Hornets.

The Tigers team had John Horvath, Brian Anderson, Carla Heggelge and John Sechrist. Later, alternate Andy Kinglsey would join them. Karl Coddington coaches the Tigers.

The Green Hornet squad was captained by Jonathan Tinklepaugh. Joseph Cloke, Courtney Sandore and Taylor Sandore completed the team.

Recently, this person said that his goal is to help his wife overcome breast cancer and has not yet considered entering the next presidential race. The answer… John Edwards.

After the first ten questions of the match, the Tigers had a 30 to zero lead.

The Tigers began to pull away in the second round and after twenty questions they held a 50 to minus-10 advantage.

The Tioga Central Tigers moved on with a convincing 140 to minus-20 win over the Green Hornets.

The next match had the Mansfield Tigers squaring off against the Elmira Free Academy Blue Devils. EFA have won the Kwasnoski Cup four times… in 1983, 1990, 1996 and 1999.

Elizabeth Burleigh anchored the Tigers along with teammates Emily Hall, Garrett Shourds and Sarah Sherman. The advisor for Mansfield, Paula Harold, was out for the day as she is about to give birth to her and her husband’s fourth child. Coaching the Tigers for the afternoon was Sherryl Burleigh.

‘Bon Appetit’ was the trademark phrase of this California-born French Chef. The answer is Julia Childs.

Who died in Babylon in 323 B.C as he was preparing to add the Arabian peninsula to his empire? The answer is Alexander the Great.

At the end of the first round, the Blue Devils held a slight 20 to 10 lead over the Tigers.

What vegetable is sauerkraut made from? The answer is cabbage.

The match remained close after twenty questions. The Blue Devils still held a 10 point edge, now leading 40 to 30.

A Rutgers University study said that one in five young men were skeptical of what institution and their ability to make it work? The answer is marriage.

Bill Murray became the voice of what weight-challenged cat? The answer is Garfield.

Elmira Free Academy pulled away for a 100 to 60 victory.

The next match was between the Tioga Central team and the Notre Dame Crusaders.

It means ‘Ourselves’ in Irish Gaelic and is the name representing the political arm of the Irish Republican Army. The answer is Sinn Fein.

It was the easternmost province of Pakistan and is one of the world’s poorest countries. What is its name today? The answer is Bangladesh.

In a tight match, the teams were tied at 10 at the end of the first round.

Who conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra and composed Peter Pan and West Side Story? The answer is Leonard Bernstein.

What is the only surviving city named in the Bible’s Book of Genesis? The answer is Damascus.

The Crusaders were up 40 to zero at the end of twenty questions.

George Washington and Dwight Eisenhower were the only presidents with a military rank of five-star general. Who was the only president who was a general with three stars? The answer is Ulysses Grant.

How many players are on a lacrosse team? The answer is 10.

The teams were tied up at 60 with two questions to go. On the ninth question of the round, the Crusaders pulled ahead, but it wasn’t enough as alternate Andy Kingsley answered, “Who was the beloved Danish writer most known for his fairy tales?” The answer is Hans Christian Andersen.

The first tiebreaker of the afternoon was about to take place.

Which leadership title did each of the following men all have? James Polk, Carl Albert, Sam Rayburn and Thomas P. O’Neill?

Notre Dame came back with the correct answer… Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Crusaders moved into the final match of the day with that 100 to 80 win. They now waited for the winner of the EFA-Dryden match.

The Dryden team, coached by Heather Brecht, had Ryan Mott, Bruce Eck, Callan Space and Dennis Prentice.

How many times has Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France? The answer is six.

What British-born person hosted Masterpiece Theater for 21 years? The answer is Alistair Cook.

At the end of the first round, The Lions from Dryden had a 30 to 10 advantage over the EFA Blue Devils.

What sport is the national sport of Canada? The answer is lacrosse.

Which state has two of the top 10 busiest airports in the world? The answer is California.

Dryden stretched their lead to 40 to 10 at the end of the twentieth question.

But in the third round, where each correct answer is worth 20 points, that wasn’t enough.

What U.S. state is named for an island in the English Channel? The answer is New Jersey.

Taking over as leader at age 32, who is the longest lasting leader in the western hemisphere? The answer is Fidel Castro.

The two teams went back and forth, exchanging the lead. First EFA, then Dryden. With one question to go, EFA held an 80 to 60 lead. But Dryden tied the match by correctly answering the final question.

On the first tiebreaker question, neither team could answer who was the 21st president of the United States. The answer is Chester Arthur.

The second question – Which professional sports hall of fame includes the following names? Leroy Kelly, Sid Luckman, Harold Grange and Bud Grant?

EFA correctly answered ‘football’ and moved into the day’s finals with Notre Dame.

As with each of the earlier three rounds, the winner of the finals would advance to the April 2nd match and a chance to win the Kwasnoski Cup and $2,000. The loser would go home with $350.

Today it has grown into the fourth largest city in the United States. What Texas city is this? The answer is Houston.

In Hawthorne’s ‘Scarlet Letter’, what was the relationship between Roger Chillingworth and the main character, Hester Prynne? The answer is husband.

At the end of the first round, the Crusaders held a 50 to 30 advantage over the Blue Devils.

What is the three word Latin phrase for someone being deported? The answer is persona non grata.

It was the personification of heaven, is one of the planets and also gives its name to a radioactive element. What is the name of the planet? The answer is Uranus.

At the end of round two, the team from Notre Dame still held on to a slim lead. Now it was 60 to 40.

First made of wood, these computer peripherals now include optical and wireless models… what are they? The answer is mouse.

The Blue Devils answered the last question, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Crusaders, who held on for a 140 to 120 victory. The EFA team would take the $350 consolation prize.

“I’m proud that they are going to the final four,” Coach Morrell said of her Notre Dame team. “There are four very talented kids up here.”

Junior High School Scholarship Challenge Next week, on Saturday, March 19, the junior high version of the Scholarship Challenge will take place at the Waverly Jr.- Sr. High School at noon.

Finals: The finals for the high school Scholarship Challenge will be held at the Waverly Jr. – Sr. High School at noon on April 2, 2005.

The Kwasnoski Cup:
The cup is named in memory of the late Dan Kwasnoski, who served as captain of the 1984 Athens Scholarship Challenge Team. Dan's family annually presents the traveling trophy to the captain of the winning team, in loving tribute to his memory.

Waverly Jr. – Sr. High School:
The Waverly Jr. – Sr. High School is located at 1 Frederick Street, in the Village of Waverly. The entrance is in the middle of the building facing the parking lot. The Challenge will take place in the auditorium... which is straight ahead and to your right after you enter the building.

DIRECTIONS: From Chemung Street Waverly, (Rt.17C) turn north on Ball Street (at the former Sugar Creek Convenience Store) and follow Ball St. until it dead ends into the high school.

To Reach Chemung Street: From Route 17/I-86: Take exit 61, turn left onto Cayuta Ave. Follow Cayuta (North) under the underpass, straight through the stop sign to the blinker light. Turn left onto Chemung Street/Rt.17C (See Above)

From Route 220: Follow 220 as far north as it goes, to a "T" in Waverly just after you cross over Route 17/I-86. Turn right onto Chemung Street/Rt.17C. (See Above)
